Have you ever heard of Lemon Dazzle?

We had a great week in second grade.  We continued our learning about measurement by creating original drinks, one was named “Lemon Dazzle”.  We used graduated cylinders and milliliters to create original drink recipes.  Students then got to vote for their favorite drink.  We had a tie for two different favorites.  Your child might come home asking you to make the drink (sorry!)

We put our new knowledge about sound to the test in Design Lab.  Students were challenged to create a musical instrument that they could sell at a store out of recycled materials and rubber bands.  Two students here chose to create tissue box guitars.

Weekly Update – Marbles and Meters and Reading, Oh My!

First off, what a fabulous reader’s theater performance we had!  Students read with expression, acted with feeling, and used props with vigor!  Thank you so much to all the parents who came to support your children.

We have had a scientific couple of weeks together.  Even though we had lots of snow days, we still managed to learn all about spinning motion and rolling motion.  Below, students were experimenting with wheel and axle systems.  They thought about different things like how the pitch of the ramp effects the speed of the system, how the system remains stable, and on what kinds of real-world objects they may find a wheel and axe system.  They are even in the process of building their own model car in Design Lab.  Stay tuned for that cool project!

We also explored rolling motion by looking at how marbles roll on a runway.  Students experimented with different types of runways like loops, spirals, and hills.  They discovered that the marble needs to start higher than the rest of the system in order for it to pick up enough speed to run the entire length of the runway.  We had a lot of fun making a mock roller coaster!

During our writing time together, we have been working on persuasive writing.  The first project is for students to write a persuasive letter to a real person or organization.  They are learning how to be quite convincing, so watch out, because soon you may be getting one of these letters!

During math, we have been learning about the metric system and the U.S. customary system.  Students practiced working with meters by measuring the hallway near the library.  They are also working with centimeters, inches, and feet.  A big measuring goal for second grade students is for them to be able to pick the right tool for measuring a specific object.

2015-02-05 13.04.26

During reading time, we have been focusing on visualizing.   Students are working on creating an image or even a movie in their minds, while they read.  This is a tough skill and they are improving every day.  If you want to check in on their visualizations, you could ask them to read out loud to you at home, then ask them what kind of a picture they were making in their minds.  You might even have them draw their visualizations into a mini spin-off book!  That could be fun.

I hope you all have a fabulous vacation.  I set a goal for myself to finish Moby Dick, which I have been working on for a while.  I challenged the students to read at least one full book over the break.  Please try to encourage them to do so.

Class Update with Video News!

First stop: Video News (sorry for the wait!)

We have been busily working in math to gain a deeper and more solid understanding of multiplication.  Students are learning different strategies and visuals for figuring out multiplication facts.  They have learned dot models, counting on their fingers, flip facts, and arrays.  Below, is a game called “Niddy Griddy” where students draw multiplication arrays on the grid.  By the end of second grade they will know AT LEAST their 0,1,2,3,5, and 10 facts!

We have excitedly dived back into science this week with more learning about balance.  Below, students created mobiles that helped them to understand weights and counterweights in relation to the balance point.  Also, one student is demonstrating how he got a pencil to balance on its’ point by choosing the right place to put the weights.2015-01-23 13.37.22 2015-01-23 13.03.03 2015-01-22 13.41.51

As Ruby noted in video news, we have completed our “How-to” books and are in the process of sharing them with the class.  Students are now experts on teaching a skill in a sequential detailed manner.

Reminder: Save the date for our reader’s theater performance on February 6th at 8:15!

Family Celebration, New Science Unit, and Reader’s Theater

It has been a busy, exciting few weeks in second grade since we have come back from winter vacation.  We drew our immigration and family history unit to a close this past week with a joyous family history celebration.  Many parents and siblings came to learn about and celebrate our varying cultural heritage.  They enjoyed different traditional foods, looked at real family heirlooms, and observed old family pictures.  Thank you to all the parents who not only helped your children understand the richness of family history, but who were able to come and join in this celebration.  It’s important that we continue to have discussions about our heritage so that we continue to know our own history and how it connects to the diverse country that is our home.

This week, we launched a new science unit all about balance and motion.  Throughout this unit, students will learn about various types of motion such as spinning, rolling, sound, and magnetic motion.  They will gain a deeper understanding of how things move around them and begin to learn the building blocks of physics!

We began our unit by test out various materials that we’ll be using in the coming weeks such as musical instruments, tops, weights, and balance shapes.

Immigration and Family History

As you know, we have been learning a lot about the story of immigration.  Specifically we have looked at why Jews left many places in Europe, we have discussed the different reasons people immigrate, and we have learned about the statue of liberty and Ellis Island.  Also, students have been learning all about their own family histories.  I can’t wait to see their projects after vacation!

This past week, students created skits to tell the story of how the statue of liberty came to America.  I did have video feed, but youtube seems to be unhappy with me right now.  I’ll post later.

Also, we were lucky to have Yasha’s mom come and talk to us about her immigration experience.

2014-12-19 08.09.56

If you are looking for an enrichment activity to do with your kids at home, take a virtual tour of Ellis Island, meet modern immigrants and look at some immigration data at scholastic website at http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/ .

We also had a super exciting Friday.  We had a visit from our first grandparent guest reader!

 2014-12-19 12.39.04

Then we made thunder cake, a recipe from Patricia Polacco’s book “Thundercake”.  We think it turned our pretty great.  Thanks to Val for helping with the baking!

Field Trip to Roger Williams Botanical Center

We had a fabulous field trip last week to the Roger Williams Botanical Center!  We had the chance to look at plants from the desert, palm, carniverous, and poinsettia families.  Students were especially excited about the pitcher plants and the venus flytraps.  We learned about a carniverous plant we had never heard of called the sundew.  Soon we will have a new pet plant.  Should we go with the venus flytrap or the pitcher plant?  Also, a special thanks to Dave Rosler for coming along on our trip!

Challah, Chanukah, Shabbat Dinner

Do you know that challah comes in many different shapes? Do you know why we braid the challah or why we eat challah on Shabbat and holidays? These were some of the student generated questions that helped shape our study of challah prior to the second graders having the chance to bake delicious challah in a variety of shapes under the expert direction of Sophie’s Mom, Valerie Philmus. Kudos to our second grade bakers and a great Todah Rabah to Valerie!  The second graders are curious for sure; additionally, our challah study led us to a discussion of the properties of yeast and how it makes the challah rise.

The school Shabbat dinner is also rapidly approaching. In addition to preparing to lead some of the Tefillot during the service, the second graders made beautiful Challah covers for each of the tables at the dinner under the expert, artistic direction of fourth grade and alumni parent, Sharon Sock. We thank her for helping us to create such colorful works of art!

First Stop: Video News

We had another fabulous week in second grade filled with reading, writing, math, science and even some social studies!

We are beginning a new unit all about immigration and family history.  Students will be learning about why people immigrate to another country, where people landed when they came to America, and much more.  Additionally, they will be learning about their own personal family history; where their ancestors came from, why they came to this country, and languages they spoke.  Stay tuned for this fabulous family project.

In science this week, Ronan brought in some fascinating flower buds, and we spent some time dissecting these cool specimens.  Students had to ask their own scientific question for the activity, and attempted to discover their own answers.  We also planted the seeds that we harvested a few weeks ago during our seed counting activity.  Pretty soon we might have an apple tree or an avocado tree.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
