Social Studies at JCDSRI
At JCDSRI, our K–5 Social Studies curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and build a strong sense of identity and community. Through an inquiry-based approach, students learn about different cultures, traditions, and communities around the world, as well as their own place in history. By studying people, places, and events from ancient civilizations to modern times, children develop a deeper understanding of the connections between geography, history, and culture.
Exploring the World and Its Cultures
A major focus of our curriculum is where students explore continents, countries, and regions, learning about the people who live there, their customs, languages, traditions, and histories. Whether traveling to Ancient Egypt, Indigenous American communities, or modern cities across the globe, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that bring these cultures to life.
Through food, music, art, storytelling, and games, they discover both the unique aspects of different cultures and the universal values that connect us all.
Building Empathy and Inclusion
Throughout all grades, we emphasize Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). These approaches ensure that all students feel seen, valued, and included, while also developing skills in empathy, communication, and problem-solving.
We teach students to be upstanders, using their voices and actions to stand up for themselves and others. By learning about historical figures who have worked for justice, children see that even small actions can create big change.
Geography and Historical Thinking
Our curriculum also helps students build geography skills, including reading maps, understanding landforms, and recognizing how geography influences culture and daily life. They explore why people move, how communities change, and how different cultures interact over time.
Through storytelling and primary sources, students begin to think like historians, asking questions and making connections between the past and present.
Global Awareness and Lifelong Learning
By the time students leave JCDSRI, they have built a strong foundation in global awareness, cultural understanding, and historical thinking. They have learned to see themselves as part
